Essay question: Online learning will replace many forms of face-to-face teaching. Do you agree?

There are many crucial issues in the 21st century. It is a time of advanced scientific and technological knowledge. Online learning has become a very important issue. Nowadays, there are more and more students study online. Also, numerous universities have courses online. And online studying has some benefits which the traditional face-to-face teaching not having. Educators debate whether online learning will replace many forms of face-to-face teaching. This essay will argue that online studying will take the place of the teaching by face-to-face because of its flexibility and the variety of educational resources.

The first argument for online learning as a replacement for face-to-face teaching is flexibility. With online learning, studying becomes more convenient. Students could learn at their own place, and set their own timetable (The Guardian 2004). And students can design respective courses they want (Hoare 2003). This means students could decide what they want to learn, where they want to have a lesson, and even what time they want to begin. With the face-to-face teaching this would not happen. What is more, online learning makes the study more efficiently. If the students choose to spend more time going into depth, the information could be found which they need easily from the CD-ROM and website (The Guardian 2004). Unlike the slower paper-based courses, e-mail access means tutors and fellow students can help quickly with queries (The Guardian 2004). The feedback of students’ work could be given in time compare to the face-to-face teaching. It is clear online learning will replace many forms of face-to-face teaching due to its flexibility in the form of convenience and efficiently.

The second argument for online learning as a replacement for face-to-face teaching is the variety of educational resources. High capacity of the resources is a major advantage. According to Hoare (2003), the University of Surrey gives their students a laptop pre-loaded with all multimedia course material, access to over 1,400 management journals and even access to students’ union. This really supports a huge number of resources for students. These resources could help students a lot. And the online resources not only provide the students with the texts, but also the huge capacity of sound and video (The Guardian 2004). The educational resources also link to the library. For example, the University of Surrey’s online MBA has links to the university’s learning resources department, a full range of academic journals and even Renters business information (Hoare 2003). Therefore, online learning will replace many forms of face-to-face teaching due to the high capacity of educational resources and the linking to the library.

In conclusion, online learning will replace many forms of face-to-face teaching. This kind of study provides the more flexible way as its convenience and efficiently. In addition, online learning holds a variety of educational resources. Therefore, online learning should be encouraged from now on.
